THE most historic event in the art of Capoeira in Asia swung last Saturday, June 1 at JCentre Mall, Mandaue City. With the presence of two Brazilian Capoeira Grand Masters from Rio de Janeiro, Mestre Cabeca and Mestre Torpedo, the festival marked history in Cebu City.

Presented by the Italian scooter brand, Vespa, and Havaianas, the event signified the baptism (Batizado) of new Capoeira members and the changing of cords (Troca de Corda) in which capoeiristas receive their new corda or belt signifying their advancement in

The highlight of the event was the graduation (Formatura) of instructor Jensen Chow, the 1st Asian Capoeirista to receive the rank of “Professor.”

Capoeiristas have to play against a “mestre” (master) in order to show their advancement and earn the right to wear a corda. Cords indicate the level of a capoeirista.

The festival, which was a first in Cebu City, drew a very large crowd and awed the audience with the unique moves of the Cebuano capoeiristas.

It was a breath of fresh air for the audience who had not known of the Brazilian martial art.

Instructor Jensen heads the only Capoeira academy in Cebu City, Sinha Bahia de Capoeira Internacional.

He aims to bring Capoeira closer to the Cebuanos.

With the responsive support of Vespa and Havaianas, Sinha Bahia de Capoeira Internacional made the festival possible filled with excitement and good vibes. (PR)
